The bike route along Childers Street, South Kensington, will be closed for six months while works are underway to build a new forecourt precinct in from of the railway station.
Childers Street, used by many bike riders, not only connects to the station but also through to Tennyson-Arden Street and Bakehouse Road, both well used commuter routes.
A detour is in place. Riders will be familiar with the diversion as it has been used previously as works were underway building the Metro Tunnel western entrance, and the accompanying flood wall.
The detour has been put in place this week as Childers Street is closed east of the Bill Vanina Pavilion.
The bike detour via Altona Street and Kensington Road is reinstated and to prevent unauthorised traffic movements, the boom gate that allows access only to local and over-height vehicles will be reinstalled on Tennyson Street for the duration of the closure.
The street realignment will create more space outside the station entrance for pedestrians and will enable the construction of an entrance canopy, garden beds, new lighting and improved pedestrian and bike connections.
This includes a raised pedestrian crossing that connects the new station forecourt and pocket park.
To the west of the station, next to the egress building, a new pedestrian area will be constructed, featuring a seated area, new lighting and extensive landscaping.
Also, 25 bicycle hoops will be installed, along with 4 accessible parking spaces and 2 emergency vehicle bays.
