Safety upgrades along Bass Coast Rail Trail

One of Victoria’s southernmost rail trails will get a series of safety upgrades, as part of major works along the Bass Highway.

Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) will be upgrading the Bass Highway near the coastal town of Kilcunda, approximately 117 kilometres south of Melbourne.

The $7.8 million project, funded by the Victorian Government, aims to improve safety and accessibility for locals and tourists, and to accommodate increased traffic volumes on the Bass Highway between Anderson and Inverloch into the future.

Community consultation undertaken by RRV identified, amongst other things, a lack of crossing opportunities for walkers and riders along the Bass Highway.

The Bass Highway upgrade will action these concerns by delivering a number of crossing upgrades and pedestrian links.

The works will result in a number of promising changes for the Bass Coast Rail Trail:

  • Pedestrian operated traffic lights opposite Kilcunda General Store to improve pedestrian safety and access to and from the Bass Coast Rail Trail and main retail area in Kilcunda
  • New concrete footpath connecting the proposed pedestrian operated traffic signals facility with the Bass Coast Rail Trail
  • Pedestrian refuge on Bass Highway at Bass Coast Rail Trail crossing point
  • New streetlighting to improve pedestrian safety and visibility for both pedestrians and road users

The Bass Coast Rail Trail is a scenic 21km trail starting at rich farmlands in Woolamai and then running along the Bass Coast through to Wonthaggi.

South Gippsland and Bass Coast Shires are hoping to eventually connect the rail trail with the Great Southern Rail Trial in the north, which would provide over 180km of continuous rail trail for the budding rider.

Early works on the Bass Highway are anticipated to commence in 2023.
