Bikes dodge St Kilda Road shutdown

Nifty planning has ensured that bikes along St Kilda Road will be largely unhindered by the partial two-week shutdown of the corridor later this month.

Intense 24/7 construction activity to realign the tram tracks in the Anzac Station precinct to their final position will fully close St Kilda Road to north bound traffic between Kings Way and Park Street.

Other local short-term closures and detours will hinder traffic in all directions.

Buses will replace trams on St Kilda Road between the Arts precinct and Commercial Road from 3am on Sunday, 27 November until 7am, Saturday, 17 December 2022.

Metro Tunnel contractors have neatly slotted bikes through the chaos with just a minor detour at the Park Street intersection. See the small notch in the map.

None-the-less riders should keep their wits about them as drivers may not adapt comfortably to the changed conditions.

Take special care emerging north bound from St Kilda Junction as some vehicles will inevitably make a last-second lurch across the bike lane towards the Queens Road exit.

The works will proceed in overlapping stages, involving removing the existing tram tracks and tram infrastructure and then building new connections to the Anzac Station tram platform and preparing for operational use of the
tram platform once works are complete.

Initially riders will observe the installation of concrete barriers and construction fencing between Kings Way and Dorcas Street and on Park Street between Wells Street and St Kilda Road.

After the last tram at 1am, Sunday 27 November, Yarra Trams will de-energise the tram lines and remove the overhead wires.

Then demolition works will be underway at both the north and south of the site, including demolition and decommissioning of the Park Street tram stop on St Kilda Road (Stop 20) and the tram tracks between the southern end of the site adjacent to Bowen Crescent and Bromby Street.

Following this demolition road construction will start while demolition activity will move into the centre of the site followed by road and tram track construction in this area.

Once the new road and trams tracks are all done, tram commissioning will take place, which involves stringing tram wires on new tram poles and running test trams.

The final task will be the completion of the new tram stops at the Anzac Station entrance.
