Ride2School Day wrap-up

For some of us oldies riding to school was a given, but these days we need to do more to encourage parents to help their children be active.

Last Friday was Ride2School Day and we celebrated at Mt Nelson Primary School with peddle-powered smoothies, a slow race and workshops throughout the day.

Thanks to Nic Street MP - Liberal Member for Franklin, Elise Archer MP, Anna Reynolds, Hobart Lord Mayor and chair of the Road Safety Advisory Scott Tilyard for stopping by to see the program in action.

And to the 19 other Tasmanian primary schools that marked the day by encouraging students to ride and putting on bike activities.

Five photos arranged in gallery showing children riding bikes, a man and woman standing between Ride2School Day flags and a line of children.

Rail trail appealed, again!

Opponents of the North East Rail Trail extension have lodged appeals to the development application approved by Launceston Council this month to extend the trail through 14 km of its municipality.

According to The Mercury the appeals against the Dorset Council project will be heard by the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in June.

A previous appeal to the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal in 2021 about the trail extension through Dorset’s land potentially causing waterway pollution was dealt with by the council being required to strengthen its environmental management plan.

New bike-friendly bridge coming for the Pipeline

The pesky bridge on the Pipeline Track that you have to get off your bike to cross will soon be replaced by a new bridge with easy access for bikes.

The section of track between Morphetts Road and Long Creek will have to close for two weeks for the new bridge to be built: Wednesday 26 April to Monday 5 May.

A handy map with the closed section marked is available at: https://www.hobartcity.com.au/.../Wellington-Park...

Get your lights out, daylight savings ends

Put your lights on your bike or in your pannier/backpack ready for Daylight Savings to end this Sunday 2 April at 3 am (the time goes back 1 hour).

The Tasmanian road rules say that when riding at night you must have a white light on the front and red light on the rear of your bike that are visible from at least 200 metres away. Lights can be steady or flashing and should also be used when weather conditions reduce visibility.

The state government has committed $25 million to improving the road route between Spreyton and Cradle Mountain and is wanting to know what people think needs to be done before 30 April, including cyclists.

You can see other comments and make your own on the Social Pinpoint map that has been set up and/or fill out the online survey: https://stategrowthtas.mysocialpinpoint.com/devonport-to-cradle-mountain-road-improvement-strategy/public-consultation#/

The roads included in the assessment are Stoney Rise Road, Mersey Main Road, Sheffield Road, Claude Road, Cethana Road, and Cradle Mountain Road.
