New expertise added to Bicycle Network board

Governance specialist Sam Butcher has joined the Bicycle Network board as a co-opted member.

While members elect two people to the Bicycle Network board each year, the board can co-opt additional unpaid directors to ensure it has the full complement of skills and competencies required.

Recently, the term of one co-opted director finished, and another co-opted director has resigned for family reasons, providing an opportunity for the board to add to its governance skillset.

Bicycle Network president James Garriock says Butcher's governance credentials are unrivalled and that he will add significantly to the organisation.

"Sam started his career as a lawyer and has held senior company secretary roles. His day job is advising boards and executive teams on all aspects of enterprise governance," Garriock says.

"He is a longstanding member of the Governance Institute Legislation Review Committee and received the institute's 2016 President’s Award.

"Sam has already shown commitment to riding and to our organisation. He's been a member for around 20 years, and has 10 Around the Bays and four Peaks Challenge rides under his belt. He also volunteers for us, organising training rides for the Around the Bay to give people the skills and confidence they need to attempt the challenge for the first time.

"I'm very grateful to Sam for taking on this honorary position, and I know you'll join me in welcoming him to the board,” Garriock says.
