CBD disruptions: Elizabeth Street

Update: This story was amended on Thursday 11 May to reflect a new start dates for the works on 22 May.

The Elizabeth Street sewer upgrade project is launching its next stage and setting up new worksites that may disrupt riders on some routes.

The north-bound lane closure in Elizabeth Street will be extended.

The project by Greater Western Water is constructing a new sewer in Elizabeth Street between Lonsdale and Victoria streets.

Works will soon begin on Lonsdale Street (site L1) and on Elizabeth Street between La Trobe and A’Beckett streets (site E3) - see map.

Riders will already be aware that work has been underway at sites between Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale streets (E1 and E2). These sites have been combined to improve pedestrian and tram safety.

Works will begin at Lonsdale Street from Monday 22 May 2023.

Elizabeth Street, between La Trobe and A’Beckett streets, (site E3), will be closed from 7:00am Monday, 1 May to 6:00pm Friday 5 May. Night works will occur (from 9pm until 5am) to start excavation next to tram lines. There will be changes to tram services.

This section of Elizabeth Street will be reopened from 6:00pm Friday 5 May for up to two weeks. Day works to install barriers, fencing and signage will occur in mid-May.

The northbound lanes on Elizabeth Street (including on-street parking) will be closed between La Trobe and A ’Beckett streets between 1 and 5 May, then from mid-May 2023. This is in addition to the existing closure between Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale streets.

Lonsdale Street westbound at Elizabeth Street will be reduced to one lane from 8 May 2023.

The westbound bus stop will be temporarily relocated to outside 379 and 383 Lonsdale Street during works. Bus services will not be impacted.

Some parking conditions on side streets will be changed to provide temporary loading, car share and disability parking spaces. Footpaths and pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

Work will occur between 7:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday, and 7:00am and 1:00pm Saturdays. There will also be night works for certain activities to minimise traffic delays and impacts to tram services and businesses.
