Planning for Maddox Road crossing underway

Planning for the Maddox Road level crossing in Newport is underway, raising hopes for significant connections for active transport in the precinct.

Bikes routes in Melbourne’s south-west are relatively sparse, yet these areas will be easily linked to the city once the West Gate Tunnel bike upgrades are completed.

Riders in Newport, Williamstown and Altona will have several options for quick, convenient routes from Newport, but south of Newport the choice is currently poor.

The Maddox Road rail bridge, along with the closure of the crossing at Champion Road, is expected to change that, enabling Hobsons Bay City to deploy a new network of local routes.

The project is now scheduled to be completed by 2026.

Community consultation is now underway to gather input into the plans, giving riders and walkers an opportunity to reinforce the importance of these developments.

Feedback closes 11.59pm Sunday 23 July.

Development work is also ramping up over the coming months, with traffic surveys on Champion Road, Maddox Road, and adjacent roads, land and utility surveying across the site and rail corridor, and environmental assessments underway.

Two other level crossings on the Werribee line are scheduled for removal — Maidstone Street, Altona will be gone in 2027 and Hudsons Road, Spotswood by 2028, along with building a new Spotswood Station, proving further opportunities for improved active transport links.
