Social Rides spreading far and wide

There is a good mix of locations among this fortnight’s list of social rides, including Hobart western and eastern shore routes, southern rides in Margate and Cygnet, Ulverstone and the regular Wednesday rides outside of Launceston.

Margate to Coningham Return – Friday 21 July

The 22.5km ride out of Margate to Coningham on Friday 21 July showcases a popular shared path,  connecting dirt trails and quiet roads to take in scenic Channel views.

Meet ride leader Jack at 9.30am at the car park at Dru Point Park, to take the path to Snug before branching off on quiet streets to Coningham Beach and returning via the path and coastal trails.

There will be a coffee stop along the way. Please RSVP in case of cancellation via https://ridewithgps.com/events/220055-margate-to-coningham-return.

Moonah Mountain Moaner – Sunday 23 July

The 18.6km Moonah Mountain Moaner ride on Sunday 23 July will be a surprise for people who don't know just how steep it is in the hills.

Meet ride leader David at 9.15am at the Cornelian Bay Boat House car park for the route on roads and trails. This ride is only suitable for experienced riders because of the many steep hills, and busy, narrow Kalang Road.

Riders will need good strength (or an e-bike), good bike control, low gears (or an e-bike), wide tyres and good brakes to deal with dirt tracks and grassy areas.

Eastern Shore Fruit Loop – Saturday 29 July

The 64km Eastern Shore Fruit Loop on Saturday 29 July is the first of three “fruit loop” rides, which are day-long explorations (leader Brian has a particular method to naming his rides).

Meet Brian at 9.30am at the Currency Café in Lindisfarne for coffee and sustenance before heading off at 10am. The ride loop is mostly on quiet roads and tracks and includes just one short section on a main road.

Halfway through the ride there will be a stop for lunch at Angie Sue’s in Lauderdale where e-bike riders can also top up batteries.

Ulverstone 3 choices – Sunday 30 July

This month’s north-west social ride on Sunday 30 July will be a 29km loop from Ulverstone, taking in Turners Beach, Leith and Forth or a 24km loop out to Penguin for riders wanting less climbing.

Meet ride leader Helen at 10.45am at Otto's Grotto car park on Dial Street. The longer loop group will head out along the path to Leith and then take to the road to Forth and back along quiet Stubbs Road and Westella Drive.

The shorter loop will take South Road to Penguin and then return along Penguin Road. People who don't want to ride on roads can take the coastal pathway to Rockcliffe Road and back.

Upcoming rides & events

If you would like to be one of our Ride Leaders, please email our Rides Coordinator with your contact details and what sort of riding you are interested in and we'll let you know when the next Ride Leader Skills Development Workshop is scheduled. You don't have to be super fit or into competitive riding, our rides are a mixed bag depending on the interests of our ride leaders. They offer everything from short 1-2 hour rides with stops along the way to day-long excursions.

COVID-19 guidelines

Our social rides leaders follow a set of protocols to help make our rides safer:

  • Meeting places for rides will have plenty of space for people to maintain 1.5 metre to 2 metre distancing while unloading bikes, listening to the briefing, and getting ready to ride.
  • Riders are asked to register online or via phone so there is no paper being handed around on the day.
  • People are asked not to attend rides if they have fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, shortness of breath or runny nose or are in mandated isolation.
