Help shape Chapel Street’s future

Bike riders have an opportunity to influence the future of Melbourne’s busy Chapel Street as work starts on a new masterplan for the underperforming thoroughfare.

The City of Stonnington believes it can be one of the great streets of the world and wants community input into the future transformation of the now traffic-choked street.

The council describes Chapel Street as "one of Melbourne’s most iconic destinations – famous for its abundance of vibrant and diverse retail, dining and entertainment offerings.

"However, in recent years the vibrancy has slowly faded and it’s time to rethink and reimagine what the street could be now and into the future,” the council says.

Could that mean active transport becomes a priority, with more people on bikes and on foot?

The council’s consultation process is seeking views on what should be prioritised for the future of the street: parking; footpath space; heritage; wide bike lanes; tram frequency; and so on.

You get allocated 100 points to weight your priorities. The survey closes on 30 September.

The council also has several pop-up engagement sessions scheduled at different locations along the street.

Stonnington says the priorities will create the overarching vision for the street, from which it will deliver the masterplan.
