Green light for Sydney beachfront cycleway

A beachfront area in northern Sydney is now a low-speed, pedestrian-friendly street with a two-way cycleway – and 2000 fewer cars each day.

The Strand in Dee Why was a bare stretch of asphalt broad enough for two lanes of motor traffic but, in August 2021, the Northern Beaches Council looked at ways to make it safer and more enjoyable for pedestrians and people riding bikes.

The Strand was part of a 12-month trial under the Streets as Shared Spaces program funded by the NSW Government.

Changes included the replacement of the two-way traffic lanes with a single northbound lane, the two-way cycleway and a boardwalk.

Speeds were limited to 30km/h, a pedestrian crossing was added and new rest areas, plants and the extension of seating areas for cafes and restaurants were installed.

The council extended the trial for another 12 months last August and has voted to make the changes permanent.

“The trial has been assessed against the project outcomes and resulted in reduced overall vehicle traffic by up to 2000 cars a day as well as improved pedestrian and visitor experience along The Strand," says Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins.

"It also supports local businesses by allowing them to expand their outdoor offering."

The council says it will seek further funding for the installation of other infrastructure improvements along The Strand.
