Grattan St lanes get green light

Work on the delivery of new, separated bikes lanes along Grattan Street through Carlton will start early next year.

The move signals a reborn eagerness by the City of Melbourne to get on with its city-shaping bike lane program.

The east-west facility will link the busy north-south routes along Swanston Street and Rathdowne Street.

Later, after the new Metro Station under Grattan Street in the university and hospital precinct is open, the facility will connect through to Elizabeth Street/Royal Parade, Peel Street, Flemington Road, and Arden Street.

The Metro Tunnel Project and the City of Melbourne will separately provide the new separated bike facilities between Flemington Road and Swanston Street.

The project comprises of 1.3km of mostly kerbside lanes behind protective kerbs and parking bays (650m in each direction) on Grattan Street from Bouverie Street to Rathdowne Street at the Carlton Gardens.

In other changes, there will be new hook-turn facilities at intersections, re-configured traffic lanes, new and relocated bus stops, and green surface treatment at conflict points.

The concept plans are here.

There was extensive consultation and planning for the project during 2021 and 2022.

Work is expected to begin soon and will take about three months to complete.

Pedestrian, car and bike access on Grattan Street will be maintained at all times while works are underway.

Work hours will be 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work required.
