Kings Park bike path a key route to Perth CBD

A new bike path has opened in Perth to provide riders with a much-needed upgrade on one of the city’s popular commuter routes.

The $2 million shared path sits within the parklands along the edge of Kings Park Road and connects with an existing shared path on Harvest Terrace.

The new path will grant riders a peaceful alternative to the stretch of unprotected road, which contains parked cars and two lanes of traffic.

A person died while riding on this section of Kings Park Road in 2014.

“We are committed to building infrastructure that connects our communities and provides safe walking and riding options around Perth’s CBD, and this new shared path does just that,” says WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.

The project was designed to minimise the loss of trees and new vegetation will be added to the area. The shared path is also complemented by lighting to improve perceptions of personal safety at night.

The new shared path along Kings Park Road is one of six active transport projects being delivered via the Perth City Deal, a $1.7 billion investment into the city’s CBD jointly funded by the federal, state and local governments.

Other works within the program include the Spring Street bike lane, the Trinity Shared Path upgrade, the Wellington Street bike lane upgrade and the Northbridge Laneways upgrade.

“We are investing record amounts in new riding and walking infrastructure over the next four years, supporting our community, the economy and creating more jobs,” says Saffioti.
