Collins St cycleway trial under design

Bicycle Network has set up a petition to show Hobart City Councillors that bike riders support a safer cycling design for Collins Street.

City of Hobart staff are working on options for a “tactical trial” on Collins Street to provide an All Ages and Abilities route, as committed to in the Greater Hobart Cycling Plan and Central Hobart Plan.

Tactical trials typically use temporary materials so are cheaper to implement and can show how a design will work before governments invest money into making it permanent.

Low Carbon Launceston survey out now

The City of Launceston is developing a plan to help the community reduce its climate change emissions, and transport is one of its three priority areas.

Let them know what would help you ride more for transport, such as safer cycleways, end-of-trip facilities, secure bike parking or subsidies to ride.

Sorell working on active transport strategy

Sorell Council has embarked on consultation for an active transport strategy for the region, and has set up workshops and an online survey.

The strategy will guide the council’s plans to prioritise new paths and cycleways when advocating to state government or applying for funding.

The project team will be at Sorell Plaza on Saturday 2 March between 11am and 1pm and a workshop, which will be held in March, will be added to the council website.

Kingborough getting Margate main street in order

Kingborough Council is developing a master plan for Margate which will hopefully lead to a safer Main Street.

An online survey is open for comments about how people use the area and the changes they’d like to see. The proposed extension of the Snug-Margate shared path to Huntingfield bypasses the main street instead of taking people to the shops and services they may want to access.

Open Spaces second grant round open

The second round of the Tasmanian Government's Open Spaces grants is open for local councils to apply to the $2 million pool of funding.

The last round saw three cycling projects get up: a shared path through Don village, improvements to the Pipeline Track in Hobart and an extension of the Whitewater Creek path in Kingston.

Let your council know if there's a path you'd like to see in your area, or suggest improvements to paths before the deadline of 15 March.

West Tamar Hwy works start in March

The Tasmanian Government will start work on 4 March to add new lanes to the West Tamar Highway between Freshwater Point Road and Acropolis Drive.

The work will not finish until late 2025 and will involve changed traffic conditions between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday, and 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on some Saturdays.

Bicycle Network has requested traffic management consideration of the many bicycle riders along this route in terms of surface conditions and speed limits.
