Merri-bek finalises Harding St Bridge design

The City of Merri-bek is in the final stages of design for the new bridge over the Merri Creek at Harding Street that links the bike networks of Coburg and Preston.

The old bridge has reached its end of life and requires replacement.

It is also too narrow and misaligned for the volume of riders and pedestrians using it to travel across and along the Creek.

Initial designs for a replacement bridge were released in 2021 and have been through several stages of development since.

The City of Merri-bek is leading the community engagement for the project and has put the latest designs out for comment: https://conversations.merri-bek.vic.gov.au/harding-street-bridge-replacement-project-design-stage

The final designs show an alignment that will remove sharp corners and better connect to existing paths and Goodwin Street on the east side.

The 4m-wide truss structure was selected to ensure clearance from flooding in a climate-changed weather environment.

It will be located just south of the existing bridge, which will be retained during construction to provide access across the Creek until the new structure is open.

The City of Merri-bek is seeking feedback on aesthetic treatments such as colour before wrapping up the design.
