Scooter trial extended . . . again

Victoria's trial of electric scooters is being extended for another six months as the state government investigates additional safety and compliance measures.

The government announced last week that e-scooters were here to stay and that it would finally introduce permanent regulations at the end of this year.

“We have more work to do on safety and compliance to ensure that e-scooters are safe,” Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Public and Active Transport, said.

The government says it is investigating extra measures to ensure e-scooter riders and other road users are fully aware of and comply with the rules for e-scooter use.

During this time, the current settings will continue.

The government says data gathered during the trial shows most e-scooter users are doing the right thing, however, more time is needed to improve compliance and make e-scooters safer, and support riders to understand the rules.

A refreshed education campaign is being developed for roll-out across trial areas, focusing on safe rider behaviour, helmet use and e-scooter parking.

Riders must not ride on footpaths, always wear a helmet, be at least 16 years old, not carry a passenger and not drink and ride.

E-scooters must not travel at more than 20km/h and only be ridden on roads with a maximum speed limit of 60km or less.
