Collins Street petition makes its way to council

Our online and offline petition to support safer cycling treatments for a trial in three blocks of Collins Street has reached 1298 signatures and is on its way to Hobart Council for tabling at its next meeting.

The online petition got to 1039 signatures, while the offline petition was signed by people who visited the Teros and Giant stores in Hobart and stopped on the Rivulet Path one February afternoon and made it to 259 signatures.

The petition calls on the Hobart councillors to honour the commitment in the Greater Hobart Cycling Plan to All Ages and Abilities cycleways on Collins Street and to include separated cycleways in the tactical trial.

Devonport bike repair café set for farmers market

The Devonport Repair Café is turning its attention to bikes on Saturday 27 April with a four-hour bike repair sessions at the farmers market in Gunn Street between 8.30am and 12.30pm.

Volunteer bike mechanics will be on hand to help people with basic repairs such as fixing flat tyres, adjusting brakes and tuning gears.

Everyone is encouraged to get the bikes out of their shed and bring them along with any spare parts they have for the bike. Any questions can be emailed to: Devonportrepaircafe@outlook.com

Cargo bike rider joins Hobart Council

Greens member and health professional Gemma Kitsos has been elected to Hobart Council following the resignation of Helen Burnett.

During the 2022 council election campaign Gemma ran on a platform of improving bike infrastructure and parking in Hobart.

“Bikes are a big part of my life. I commute to work by my touring bike, drop the kids to school on the cargo bike, run errands on the e-bike and mountain bike for the love of it!  “

Channel Hwy works south of Margate involves some disruption

The Department of State Growth will be working on sections of the 40km stretch of Channel Highway south of Margate from 22 April until 17 May.

The installation of new crash barriers and signage will happen between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and will involve speed limit changes and some traffic management.

Scottsdale helps kids learn to ride

Work will start on a new learn-to-ride bicycle track for children at Scottsdale after Anzac Day, with June the deadline for the work to be finished.

The “mini road network” track is being built with $50,000 in state government funding, $30,000 private donation and the balance from Dorset Council.

It’s the first stage of the Scottsdale Bike Park project, with the second stage of a pump track and jumps not yet funded.
