Swanston route re-jigged for station entrance

The next stage of works at the Swanston Street entrance to State Library Station begins this week with the closure of the existing footpath and new arrangements for pedestrians, bikes and vehicles.

To create more space for construction activities adjacent to the building site, people on foot have been moved onto a temporary path on what was the northbound road. Bikes have been edged out further into what was the traffic lane, and they will now share space with motor vehicles.

As vehicle access in the short stretch of Swanston Street at this location is already difficult, and bikes are already the predominant road user, this arrangement should be functional.

Barriers will be installed to protect pedestrians from any errant bicycles and cars.

The Swanston Street crossing on the north side of La Trobe Street will remain closed, with the crossing on the southern side of La Trobe Street remaining open.

Access to businesses, RMIT and residential buildings will be maintained at all times.

The station entrance on the corner of La Trobe and Swanston Streets leads to the station seven levels below the street.

Materials for the station fitout involve deliveries and installation of steel beams and glass, lighting, elevators, escalators and ticket gates.

There will also be considerable works at the surface level including underground services, tram poles, bollards, and pavement outside the station.
