How does your city rate?
The PeopleForBikes City Ratings have landed for 2024, showcasing the best and worst of more than 2500 cities around the world in terms of bike-friendliness. The project uses data analysis software to grade a city’s bike network depending on how well it gets riders where they need to go, how much they’re exposed to motor vehicles along the way and how stressful the overall experience might be.
Canberra scored the highest of the Australian cities included in the ratings due to its “excellent network of shared paths”. Port Macquarie, meanwhile, was listed as the worst with a score of 24.

University of Melbourne researchers need your help
A research team at the University of Melbourne is investigating behaviour change in utilitarian bike riders, and conducting two surveys, one for beginner riders and the other for riders of any experience level, to better understand how people’s beliefs and behaviours shift after they’ve started riding.
