Delayed bridge expected soon

The new bridge over the Moonee Ponds Creek between Strathmore and Oak Park is expected to be lifted into place late in August.

The connection, part of the Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek Project, has faced extended delays, mostly due to planning approvals and design issues.

The span will be craned into position from Margaret Street on the Oak Park side of the creek in the last weekend of August.

The bridge, three metres wide and suitable for pedestrians and bike riders, will be just upstream of the existing narrow structure (pictured) which was a barrier to those on bikes.

The existing bridge will be closed for a day and Brosnan Crescent, between Odin Street and Strathmore North Primary School, will be closed

Trees have been removed for the bridge and to create connecting shared paths, however, the project will plant a total of 31,000 native plants in the area and more at another suitable location.

Melbourne Water is leading the delivery of the Reimagining project on behalf of the Chain of Ponds Collaboration Group, and in partnership with Merri-bek City Council, Moonee Valley City Council, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.

The aim is to transform a concreted section of Moonee Ponds Creek into a more natural looking waterway and create an enjoyable community space.
