Riders can now get a glimpse of the future ramp that will dramatically change the experience of riding the Main Yarra Trail through Abbotsford.
The ramp structure along the river’s edge to the north of the construction zone is completed with the platforms and riding surface in place. Balustrades will come soon.
The erection of the ramp under the Collins Bridge and to the south will be underway over the next few months, along with the construction of piers for the ramp that curves back and up to Gipps Street.
It appears that from an engineering perspective the project is about 70% done, and most of the structural and finishing works could be near complete by the end of the year.
There will be extensive landscaping and planting to come at the end of the project, and seasonal factors may influence the timing. Weeding has started on the northern embankment.
The Collins Bridge, intermittently closed while heavy steel components were craned across to the northern side of the bridge, is now open again.
However, it is likely that further short-term closures over three days or so could be required in the coming months as crane lifts on the south side of Gipps Street come close to the Collins Bridge.
Notification will be given to riders in advance of any further closures.
Detours for Main Yarra Trail remain in place for trail users via Abbotsford and Nicholson Street.
