Seniors get rolling across the state

Seniors Weeks has inspired two family-themed social rides so grandparents and grandchildren can ride together: in Hobart on the Intercity Cycleway to appreciate the solar system artwork by Tom O’Hern, and in the north-west along the Coastal Pathway.

Bothwell Apsley Country Loop – Sunday 13 October

The Bothwell Apsley Country Loop is a 44km long ride on Sunday 13 October on mainly quiet gravel roads.

Meet ride leader David at 10.15am at Queens Park in Bothwell at the Alexander Street end. The ride will start and finish in Bothwell and is suitable for wide-tyred bikes because of the gravel roads.

Going Solar: Seniors Week Ride – Saturday 19 October

The Seniors Week theme this year is “connecting across the generations” so the Hobart Going Solar ride on Saturday 19 October is inviting grandparents to bring along their grandchildren to learn about the solar system on the Intercity Cycleway.

Meet ride leader Di at 9.15am at the Cenotaph car park on McVilly Drive to ride along the cycleway with stops at each of the @tomohernia planets painted on the path to talk all things solar system.

Drinks and snacks at the Cornelian Bay Boathouse before returning to the Cenotaph, all up the ride is about 7km.

Seven Mile Beach to Sorell – Saturday 19 October

The two-loop Seven Mile Beach to Sorell ride on Saturday 19 October takes advantage of off-road paths and quiet roads to deliver a 29km ride.

Meet ride leader Brian at 9.45am at Seven Mile Beach playground for the scenic journey around Orielton Lagoon and the thrill of riding under landing jets.

There’ll be a coffee and chat afterwards at the Seven Mile Beach shop, but please RSVP as the ride will only go ahead if the weather is suitable: https://ridewithgps.com/events/334881-seven-mile-beach-to-sorell

Bring the Family Ride – Sunday 20 October

This scenic, easy, family bike ride between Turners Beach and Don Heads – out and back along the scenic Coastal Pathway will celebrate Senior’s Week.

Meet at 10:30am at the Berry Patch car park in Turner’s Beach for a pre-ride bike check before heading onto the pathway.

There will be the opportunity to turn back early if the 24km route is too long. RSVP via https://ridewithgps.com/events/335277-seniors-week-bring-the-family-ride

North-west Coastal Pathway: Burnie to Wynyard opening – Thursday 24 October

After watching the progress of the Burnie Council section of the Coastal Pathway over the past year, it’s now time to celebrate its completion with a ride to the opening festivities on Thursday 24 October.

Join our ride leader and driving force behind the pathway, Keith, at 9.30am at the car park behind the University of Tasmania’s West Park campus for departure at 9.45am along the new 6.5km section of rail trail.

The council’s opening celebration starts at 10.30am at the playground near the Somerset Surf Club. More information via https://ridewithgps.com/events/335276-nw-shared-coastal-pathway-burnie-to-wyny

Knocklofty Kneetrembler - Sunday 27 October

The 26km Knocklofty Kneetrembler ride on Sunday 27 October is a quick trip up the slopes followed by a more relaxed return along the Intercity Cycleway.

Join ride leader David at the Cenotaph car park at 10am for the challenging route up through West Hobart to Mount Stuart to 253m height, then down through Lenah Valley and back along the river.

The route suits experienced riders or people wanting to improve their skills on gravel and steep slopes. As such, you’ll need a low geared or electric bicycle and wide tyres for gravel paths.

COVID-19 guidelines

Our social rides leaders follow a set of protocols to help make our rides safer:

  • Meeting places for rides will have plenty of space for people to maintain 1.5 metre to 2 metre distancing while unloading bikes, listening to the briefing, and getting ready to ride.
  • Riders are asked to register online or via phone so there is no paper being handed around on the day.

People are asked not to attend rides if they have fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, shortness of breath or runny nose or are in mandated isolation.
