Work on the new underground station at the north end of Swanston Street will expand again this week causing further disruption to bike traffic.
As the State Library Station precinct moves towards the final phase of construction, including entrance fitout and public realm works, a footpath closure is required on Swanston Street adjacent to the work site at the corner of La Trobe Street.
As part of these works, partial footpath closures up to A'Beckett Street will also be required.
From Thursday 3 October to December the Swanston Street footpath between La Trobe Street and the northern end of the work site will be closed.
There will be partial closures as far as A'Beckett Street.
There will be traffic impacts for motorists, bike riders and pedestrians during these works. Access will be maintained for motorists and bike riders travelling northbound on Swanston Street via a shared-use lane.
As well as the Swanston Street western footpath closure, the north-south pedestrian crossing will close and pedestrians will be diverted to the eastern footpath to continue north up Swanston Street.
Activities include installation of underground services, bollards, kerb and pavement outside the main entrance to the new station, reconstructing the footpath, traffic lanes, kerbs and road surface, including asphalting and line marking.
Work hours are 24-hours Monday to Friday, and 7am to 12am Saturdays and Sundays.
Riders should be alert to pedestrians who, rather than cross to the other side of the street, may attempt to walk contra-flow against bike and motor traffic heading north past the construction zone.
