Next stage of Kororoit Creek Trail opened

The missing link on the Kororoit Creek Trail that connects it through to the Federation Trail in Laverton North is complete.

This opens up an exciting experience for riders in Melbourne’s south west who will also soon benefit from other route options to be opened up by the West Gate Tunnel Project.

Until now the lower Kororoit Creek Trail travelled only as far north as the lookout at the GJ Hosken Reserve in Altona North.

There was no path under Grieve Parade, the Westgate Freeway or Geelong Road, where the last link up to the Federation Trail had already been built.

The West Gate Freeway project stepped in to provide the missing section, which now crosses from the east to the west side the of creek over the historic bluestone bridge, which once hosted the old Geelong Road.

The new section of trail, the underpasses and the landscaping are some of the best you would see.

The trail is extra wide in sections because it will occasionally provide access to vehicles that maintain high-voltage power line towers in the area.

Vegetation plantings along the previously built sections of the creek are a great example of how Melbourne’s waterways can be environmentally resurrected.

The Friends of the Lower Kororoit Creek, with support from the state government, councils and nearby business Toyota have done a superb job for the environment, walkers and bike riders.

The section of creek south of Barnes Road is still awaiting its trail and landscape upgrade, but the funding application went in recently. Once built this will take the trail through to Cherry Lake, and give riders the opportunity to ride to the beach in Altona.

There are still some features to be installed in the new section during 2025, including interpretive signs and public art to commemorate the area’s heritage, culture and landscape.
