The state government has announced that stage two of the Barwon Heads Road upgrade will be underway by early next year, further extending the shared path being constructed as part of the project.
The next stage will take the upgraded road another 4km south between Reserve Road and Lakes Road, Charlemont and Lake Road, Armstrong Creek.
The first stage of the project delivered a shared path and other bike facilities over 4km between Settlement Road in Belmont and Reserve Road.
The new project adds additional lanes to the road, new traffic lights at Newport Drive and Boundary Road, new pedestrian crossings with traffic lights, new street lighting, road signage, drainage, and landscaping.
It will also upgrade intersections at Warralily Boulevard, Central Boulevard and Precinct Road.
The $250m project, jointly funded by the federal government, was announced as reaching Lower Duneed Road further south, but stage two has been truncated.
When the project can connect to Bluestone School Road, and the popular riding routes beyond, residents of Geelong will have great access to the growing southern suburbs and the coastal regions.
When full construction ramps up next year, bikes will be detoured away and along other routes, with few good options available. Major Roads projects will continue to develop the detour routes. Details will be announced closer to the date.
