Major detours for Koonung Trail

As work to upgrade the Eastern Freeway continues to move further in the outbound direction, more disruptions and detours are emerging for bike riders along the Koonung Trail.

Already, the trail on the north side of the freeway has been closed between Bulleen Road and Doncaster Road and diverted to the south side.

Crews are now setting up sites for major construction in what is known as Zone 3 – Doncaster Road to Tram Road.

This has resulted in the closure of the north side trail along the freeway from Doncaster Road towards the Heyington Bridge with a detour, again on the south side of the freeway. See dotted green line on map for detour.

On the south side, the detour takes a number of turns up and down local streets, including Clifton Street and Winfield and Winfield Road, at which point it rejoins the local trail network back to the main trail.

Riders then proceed towards Edgar Park, taking few minor diversions before turning up Edgars Road rather than using the underpass, and then crossing to join the Bushy Creek Trail.

Riders then depart the Bushy Creek Trail to proceed along Morley Court and Paul Avenue and then rejoining the main trail.

Note that some places the pedestrian detour takes a different route.

On local streets the traffic volumes and speeds are low and the gradients are comfortable.

North East Link Project has upgraded and modified a number of connections along this detour to make the route safer and more convenient.
