The NSW government has announced plans to legalise e-scooters as part of its new E-micromobility Action Plan.
The move comes in recognition of a regulatory blind spot that allows e-scooters to be purchased in stores, but not ridden on NSW streets.
The government says the latest data shows that 459,000 e-scooters are owned in homes across NSW. It also reveals that 34% of e-microbility trips are replacing car trips in greater Sydney and 45% in regional NSW.
The government’s action plan aims to review the road rules around e-micromobility, including options for the legal use of e-scooters on streets and roads and to deliver more shared e-scooter trials.
Before making any decisions, the government says it is looking at getting the right regulatory framework in place and ensuring e-scooter riding is safe for all road users and pedestrians.
