Tunnel collapse closes Alpine Road

UPDATE: The Great Alpine Road has reopened between Harrietville and Dargo High Plains Road following repairs to a section of road damaged by a collapsed mine tunnel.

The road has been reinstated with layers of compacted crushed rock and has been reopened to traffic with a reduced speed limit in place.

Crews will return to site in the coming weeks, weather permitting, to reinstate the asphalt road surface and line marking.

During these works lane closures will be required, traffic management will be on-site and a reduced speed will be in place.

Riders who may be training for Peaks Challenge early next year should be alert to the possibility of a gravel surface at this location.

The Great Alpine Road had been closed due to the collapse of a former mine tunnel 4km kilometres kilometres south of Harrietville (see image above).

The tunnel was a mine adit – a horizontal passage to an underground mine used for access or ventilation.
