New Coastal Pathway section mapped

The newest section of the north-west’s Coastal Pathway is the newest addition to our self-guided Ambassador rides.

The RidewithGPS rides include a map and handy tips to help you plan your ride, and if you’re a Bicycle Network member you also get downloadable audio cues so you don’t have to wrangle paper maps.

The Wynyard to Cooee (Burnie) section of the Coastal Pathway has been open for five months and has proved a popular addition over summer but will be just as fun to ride in autumn.

The ride is an enjoyable day ride suited to riders of all abilities as it’s flat and protected from vehicles.

Start the ride in Wynyard with the view of getting to Burnie for lunch and returning, or reverse if you’d prefer to start and end in Burnie.

Before leaving Wynyard you can check out the Watershed Gallery for some local art and if you didn’t eat enough for breakfast or need another coffee, Bruce’s Café is not far along.

Most of the route to Burnie runs along the coast where the rail line used to be so you have Bass Strait to your left and pockets of nature reserves.

Doctors Rocks reserve is about a third of the way along the path and you can climb up to the top for a slightly elevated view. It’s home to a Little Penguin colony so don’t go climbing through the vegetation as that’s where they mostly nest during September–April.

The next major stop is the town of Somerset where the excellent Bicycle Centre Burnie is located in case you need emergency supplies.

The new walking and cycling bridge over the Cam River takes you in Ocean Vista, Cooee and on to Burnie where you can stop for lunch and poke around town. If you keep riding past the city centre you’ll get to another good bike shop, West Beach Cycles, where you can turn around and head back.

North-east wineries ride update

The popular North-East Wineries ride has had a route update following new path builds along the West Tamar Highway.

It now also recommends drawing out the 239km ride over 3 full days and two half days to avoid an overly long first day.

Other changes include new accommodation and food offerings, with suggested lunch stops where you can charge e-bike batteries.
