West Gate Tunnel construction intensifies

The West Gate Tunnel Project is building momentum as it races to completion later this year, with 24/7 construction activity between the Port of Melbourne and the city.

Pearl River Road has now been reopened with traffic in all directions at the intersection with Footscray Road and the CityLink off-ramp.

Riders need to be observant at the signals now that traffic is moving on all legs.

The bike crossing from the Moonee Ponds Creek at CitiLink across to the Costco corner at Pearl River Road is also reopened.

Work on the 14km of new and upgraded bike and walking paths linking the west to the city continues, with structures and bridges opening progressively during the year.

The Footscray Road trail between Shepherd Bridge and Pearl River Road faces periodic overnight and continuous closures, sometimes at short notice. The established detour via the Moonee Ponds Creek and Dynon Road will operate during these periods.

These closures allow works to continue for adjacent roadworks, applying the final layer of asphalt on the elevated roads, bridges, and remaining sections of Footscray and MacKenzie roads.

Utility installations, landscaping, rectification works, and reinstatement of the ground level walking/cycling path (which will remain to supplement the Veloway) on Footscray Road between Maribyrnong Street and Waterfront Way will continue.

At the Simms Street–MacKenzie Road loop, drainage installation works on the monument shared use path will continue.

In north and west Melbourne, lighting, signage and utility installation works will continue until mid 2025 on Dryburgh, Victoria and Spencer streets. There will be utility installation works along the northern footpath between Anderson, Stawell and Dryburgh streets.

These works will require a continuous, full closure of the footpath for approximately five weeks, with a temporary detour diverting users onto Ireland Street.
