North Sydney Council has rolled out a new rideshare parking system aimed at reducing the number of bikes blocking footpaths.
Rideshare bikes expanded into the North Sydney area in November 2024; however, challenges soon emerged, with parked rideshare bikes choking footpaths and inefficiently distributed across the region.
Following the recommendation of Transport for New South Wales, North Sydney Council has implemented a 12-month trial of dedicated rideshare parking, with 50 new locations designated for the bikes across North Sydney’s city centre, Crows Nest, St Leonards and Milsons Point.
The parking spots are on footpaths where there is enough room for pedestrians or in 'no stopping' areas, so car parking spaces are not removed.
The trial includes geofencing around specific locations and line marking and follows a similar trial led by Transport for New South Wales in the City of Sydney.
The trial cost is estimated to be $22,500 and will be funded by the Active Transport Facilities Budget. The council will also seek funding from e-bike providers.
After 12 months, the council will assess the success of the trial on the basis of compliance, reduced obstructions and improved user satisfaction. Community feedback will be sought.
