City of Newcastle Council plans to invest more than $6.1 million in cycleway projects, it announced on World Bicycle Day, 3 June 2025.
As outlined in its draft 2025–2026 budget, the council proposes linking Lambton Park to Croudace Street, connecting Brunker Road, Adamstown, to Newcastle West, and continuing the Hunter Street trial cycleway west through to Wickham and Islington.
A roundabout bypass is also planned on Parkway Avenue in Hamilton South, along with future Richmond Vale Rail Trail connections in Minmi and Fletcher and a shared path on Reserve Road at The Hill.
Additionally, the council plans to continue the delivery of the Jesmond cycleway after receiving a $2 million grant via the New South Wales Government's Get NSW Active program. The project will deliver a safer 800m off-road shared path along Blue Gum Road and through Heaton Park and MacClure Reserve, including two new bridges over Dark Creek.
The ongoing investment is aimed at making Newcastle a more active and accessible city that is safer for bike riders and pedestrians by 2030.
Ryan Tranter, Executive Manager for Transport and Regulation, said the council wanted “to encourage more people to consider using active transport, with riding and walking to become the natural choice for short trips”.
"The investment included in our draft 2025–26 budget reflects City of Newcastle's ongoing commitment to provide safe, connected and convenient infrastructure that supports people to cycle and walk," he said.
The news comes as another expansion of the cycling network goes ahead in Islington: the construction of a 665m link connecting the existing cycleway and shared path infrastructure.
The project is supported by a $950,000 grant from the New South Wales Government and features landscaped kerb extensions for improved visibility, an on-road separated bi-directional cycleway and a raised priority crossing across John Hooker Street.
The council has also announced community riding and bike maintenance courses to be held throughout June to encourage locals to ride.
Maintenance classes will be held on 14 and 28 June at Adamstown Community Hall and cycling skills events will take place at the Kentish Oval Netball Courts in New Lambton on 7 June and at the National Park Netball Courts on 22 June. More information is available on the City of Newcastle website.
