Mickleham Road upgrade moves ahead

Stage 2 of the massive Mickleham Road upgrade project – which will add shared paths to the widened arterial – has moved to the advanced planning stage.

Following on from the $219m Stage 1 upgrade, which is now completed, the next stage will be constructed on Mickleham Road between Dellamore Boulevard and Craigieburn Road, Yuroke.

This stage will also connect 5.5km of recently upgraded Craigieburn Road West, creating an extensive bike path connection right through to Craigieburn Station.

As well as the new bike facilities, the project will add extra road lanes, increasing Mickleham Road to three lanes in each direction and adding traffic lights at the Mickleham Road and Dunhelen Lane and Cookes Road intersections.

A business case has been completed, which examined the upgrade in detail to recommend a design and identify the best delivery approach.

Planning work completed to date includes traffic modelling, constructability assessments, economic modelling, stakeholder/community consultation and environmental investigations.

Planning work is continuing, as the upgrade moves towards construction. Key activities include:

  • detailed on-site environmental investigations to further understand flora and fauna which might be impacted by the upgrade
  • preparing a Cultural Heritage Management Plan – to outline measures to ensure Aboriginal cultural heritage is recognised and safeguarded
  • refining the upgrade’s design
  • on-site investigations including identifying underground utilities, testing ground conditions, drainage and flood modelling
  • appointing a construction partner.

Construction timelines will be known once planning has progressed further.
