Islington cycleway complete

Newcastle has delivered a new cycleway and shared footpath connecting the Scholey Street rail bridge in Mayfield with Islington Park and the city centre.

The new 665-metre stretch connects existing cycleway and shared path infrastructure.

It includes an on-road, separated, two-directional cycleway using concrete separators along the north side of Chinchen Street from Linden Street to the east side of the Styx Creek bridge.

It also features a shared path along Chinchen Street and Hubbard Street from Styx Creek bridge to John Hooker Street.

Freshly landscaped curb extensions at the Linden Street intersection have improved visibility and separation for riders crossing.

The project has also introduced connections into the existing shared path at the Clyde Street traffic signals to provide a separated, off-road option through the intersection.

Finally, a raised priority path has been installed on Hubbard Street across John Hooker Street to give shared path users priority over road users at the intersection.

The majority of work is now complete, with only some additional line markings and designs to be added on the shared path area near Islington Public School during June and July.

Temporary lighting is in place near the John Hooker Street raised priority path. Permanent lighting will be installed in the coming months.

The project supports the City of Newcastle's Cycling Plan (2021–2030) and forms a key link in the R6 Regional Route, which connects Newcastle city centre to the University of Newcastle's Callaghan campus.
