The important and popular trail along the rail line through Glen Waverley is getting a major upgrade.
The Waverley Rail Trail between Syndal and Glen Waverley stations is to be widened to three metres and will gain a proper three-metre section along the Syndal Station car park where the road will be narrowed and realigned.
Starting this month the City of Monash will construct the new 1.2km path between Coleman Parade and the rail line to replace the existing path which is currently too narrow for the volume of bike traffic it carries.

The section beyond Myrtle Street, at the car park at Glen Waverley Station, is not part of the upgrade, as the Suburban Rail Loop project is underway in that precinct with the last section of the upgrade to be delivered by Suburban Rail Loop.
The development of Glen Waverley for the Suburban Rail Loop, along with associated housing and business expansion, means the trail will have a vital role in active transport for the precinct.
In the other direction the trail follows the rail line through the education precinct at Holmesglen through to the Gardiners Creek and Scotchmans Creek Trails.
The route is one of Melbourne’s designated Strategic Cycling Corridors and will form part of the proposed Green Loop project through several municipalities, linking to the Chadstone shopping district.
As well as the new path, the project will also reconstruct and repair the road pavement, kerb and channel, repair and increase the capacity of the stormwater drainage system, replace damaged footpath and pram ramps, and upgrade bus stops to meet accessibility standards.

The project will proceed in four stages, starting this month with scheduled completion next April.
Traffic management plans will be in place to safely detour vehicles, pedestrians and riders past the work areas.
