Kingston cycleway delayed

Bike riders in Canberra will have to wait a little longer for the expansion of the pop-up Kingston C2 cycleway as site complexities delay the project's design.

Stage 1 of the popular pop-up cycleway was built last year between Kings Avenue and Bowen Park to address overcrowding.

The bi-directional stretch of bike lane is separated from motor traffic by recycled rubber bollards, with new kerb and pavement constructed at either end to link the cycle lane to the existing off-road path network. The path was constructed in just two months.

Stages 2 and 3, originally slated for detailed design by mid-2025, have now been pushed back to the end of the year.

Stage 2 will upgrade the infrastructure between Bowen Drive and Canberra Avenue Service Road. The route will include a mix of shared and separated cycling facilities along with raised and at-grade pedestrian crossings.

Stage 3 will upgrade the route to the Monaro Highway/Canberra Avenue underpass.

Detailed design work is currently underway, with construction of priority sections of Stage 2 of the cycleway to begin as soon as designs are finalised.

Once complete, the Kingston cycleway will connect Canberra's central city with Queanbeyan, linking shopping districts, schools and community facilities along the way.

The development is in line with the ACT Government's Active Travel Plan 2024–30, which aims to get 'more Canberrans walking and cycling more often to improve quality of life'.
