Auckland can try bikes on buses, why can’t we?
Auckland Transport started the next stage of its bikes in buses trial this month, with 15 racks installed on its NX service across the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Metro Tasmania briefly trialled bike racks on the outside of a few buses more than 10 years ago but has not trialled an in-bus rack. Bicycle Network has repeatedly called on the government to fund an independent trial of bikes on public buses in Tasmania.
We couldn’t agree more with Auckland Transport’s rationale for trialling the bike racks: “By making it easier for Aucklanders to combine a bicycle ride and a public transport trip, it opens up options for more people to use public transport. This could save many Aucklanders time and money, as well as contributing to health and environmental goals.”
Devonport adds rail crossings
Devonport Council has opened a new crossing over the waterfront railway to link shared paths for a more seamless ride alongside the Mersey River.
North–South Track to be overrun on 3 August
A popular Wellington Park mountain bike trail will be chockers with runners on Sunday 3 August between 9am and 12pm.
The Tolosa Half and Tolosa Quarter events will see runners head up the Fire Trail from Tolosa Mountain Bike Park utilising the North–South Track and Lenah Valley Track, with turnarounds at The Springs and Old Hobartians Track respectively.
The North–South Track will not be closed to riders but be aware up to 350 runners are expected.

Hobart tweaks Collins Street trial
The City of Hobart has tweaked its Collins Street trial, adding a stripe of blue paint on its concrete bike lane separators to improve their visibility.
The changes follow the call for feedback at the trial’s one-month post-installation mark.
