The first 20 kilometres of the long-awaited Wollongong mountain bike trails around Mount Kembla are set to open to riders this spring.
The trails are designed to cater for riders of all ages and abilities, featuring green and blue trails as well as black trails for experienced riders.
The trails are ready to ride, but wet weather has delayed their official opening, scheduled for Friday 15 August.
Updates will be provided by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) via physical signs on the trails, alerts on the on the NPWS website, and on the Trailforks app.
This first stage of the trails, a joint project between the NPWS and Wollongong City Council, has been under construction for just under two years.
"When these trails open in spring, they will deliver sustainable and inclusive mountain biking in one of New South Wales' most iconic natural landscapes," said Ryan Park, Minister for the Illawarra and the South Coast.
"Whether you're exploring with family or seeking a bit of adventure, these trails will be an exhilarating way to discover the Illawarra Escarpment.
"We're an active community and these trails will bring yet another fun and adventurous activity to our doorstep while showcasing the natural beauty of our region."
Construction on the next two stages of the trails – Kembla Trails Stage 2 and the Balgownie Trails – is set to begin after final approvals are received.
Once complete, it is hoped the 70-kilometre network of mountain bike trails will become a major tourist attraction.
