Elizabeth Street to close for tram works
Elizabeth Street will be closing to all traffic at the Victoria Market precinct until late October.

A major tram network upgrade starting on Monday 6 October 2025 will be replacing old tram tracks and road surface through the intersection of Elizabeth and Victoria streets.

Activities will be underway 24 hours a day between 8pm Monday 6 October and 4.30am Monday 27 October 2025, along Victoria Street from Bouverie Street to Peel Street, and along Elizabeth Street from Therry Street to Queensberry Street.

The closures will be massively disruptive to traffic. The Elizabeth Street and Victoria Street bike lanes will be closed.

Bikes can use Peel Street, Queensberry Street and Swanston Street to avoid the area.

As part of these works, there will be a new central level-access tram stop on Victoria Street at Queen Street and expanded side platform stops on Elizabeth Street to service the new G-Class trams.

There will also be new east–west tram tracks to enable flexibility, network resilience and a future tram connection from Swanston Street to the Arden precinct.

North of Victoria Street, along Elizabeth Street, the tram track crossover will be replaced.

The project will also remove the westbound left turn from Victoria Street into Elizabeth Street, and introducing a second westbound through lane, to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety for pedestrians accessing Queen Victoria Market.

During the works period the work zone will have full kerb-to-kerb road closure and fencing.

Victoria Street will be closed from Bouverie Street to Peel Street:

  • intersection of Bouverie and Victoria streets will be open
  • intersection of Leicester and Victoria streets will be closed
  • intersection of Victoria and Elizabeth streets will be closed
  • intersections of Victoria, Cobden and O’Connell streets will be closed
  • intersection of Peel and Victoria streets will be open.
Elizabeth Street will be closed between Therry and Queensberry streets:

  • inner traffic lanes between Queensberry Street and Haymarket roundabout will be closed. Service lanes will remain open
  • intersection of Therry and Elizabeth streets will be open.
