Shape the future of Sunshine Coast riding
Sunshine Coast Council is calling on riders and pedestrians for feedback as it updates its draft Active Transport Plan

The plan will shape the council's work over the next decade on active transport programs, planning, infrastructure and advocacy.

Its overarching aim is to help "Create a liveable, healthy, safe and connected Sunshine Coast by making walking, riding and wheeling an easy choice for everyday trips."

The draft plan, which is based on earlier community feedback, sets out practical steps to make it easier and safer to use active transport.

It outlines three priority areas for action:

  • Networks and infrastructure (e.g., providing safe, inclusive and connected walking and riding networks; expanding the network while linking local destinations)
  • Supporting activities (providing complementary infrastructure to make fully active trips possible and comfortable, e.g., investigating a safe urban streets program, planning more end-of-trip facilities, improving shade coverage along existing routes)
  • Promoting, influencing and encouraging (encouraging more uptake of active transport among the community through a variety of methods)
The plan particularly notes that preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a major project, with private car travel to games venues not supported for spectators and active transport networks instead bridging the gap.

Ultimately, Sunshine Coast Council hopes to see 20% of trips made by active transport by 2041, a goal set in the Integrated Transport Strategy (2018).

Council is seeking feedback on whether this plan is on the right track. You can complete the feedback survey here before 5pm Monday 3 November, or attend one of the pop-up events listed here.

Managing for Growth Portfolio Councillor Winston Johnston said: "We are asking the community for feedback to ensure we've got it right.

"We want to know if we have heard you correctly and developed actions that support you to walk, ride or wheel more in your local area.

"More people are choosing to live, work and enjoy life here on the Sunshine Coast – and who can blame them?

"But as our population grows, we want the Sunshine Coast to be a place where getting from A to B is simple, safe and easy – whether you're walking, riding a bike or using a mobility aid like a wheelchair."
