The project to remove the Ruthven Street level crossing in Macleod will deliver an extension of the shared path along the railway line.
The state government has announced that it will remove the level crossing by building a rail bridge over the road.
This design creates space for more landscaping and the new shared user path along Ellesmere Parade – filling a long-standing missing link in the local walking and cycling network and giving pedestrians and cyclists a safer, more direct connection between Ruthven Street and Davies Street.
This section of the walking and cycling path is the missing link between existing paths on McNamara Street and Ellesmere Parade.
A new signalised pedestrian crossing near the rail bridge will improve safety for pedestrians and bike riders crossing Ruthven Street.
Engineering assessments have found that a 600-metre rail bridge will also enable faster construction and minimise disruption for locals and rail passengers.
It is seeking planning submissions as part of planning approvals for the project.
The project is in the early planning stages and site investigations are underway. Further detailed design, engineering assessments and community consultation will inform the design of the project.
Construction will begin in 2026 and be completed in 2027.
There are information sessions where you can learn more about the project and ask the project team questions
The online information session via Zoom takes place next Monday 8 December from 6pm to 7pm, and the in-person sessions are at Macleod College on Wednesday 10 December at 5.30pm to 6.15pm, 6.30pm to 7.15pm and 7.30pm to 8.15pm.
There is a survey and an FAQ on the website.
The Hurstbridge Line Upgrade has delivered more train services and better public transport connections by duplicating 3.5 kilometres of track, building new stations at Greensborough and Montmorency, and creating a 2-kilometre walking and cycling path between the two stations.
