New bike helmet standard now law

Tasmania has finally joined the rest of the country now the parliament has passed a new helmet standard which will allow more models to be sold.

The revamped Commonwealth standard allows helmets which have met certain European Union and United States standards to be sold in Australia without further testing.

In theory, the change should mean a drop in helmet prices and a greater range of models on offer. Tasmanian bike stores are now legally permitted to sell the greater range of helmets.

Edgy road treatment suggested in Launceston

Launceston councillor Alan Harris has requested investigation of an edge lane treatment for Windermere Road, which could be a first in Tasmania.

The narrow road is popular with people walking and riding but there is little space to provide a separate shared path.

Edge lane treatments are used when traffic volumes are low and involve converting two traffic lanes to one, with cycle lanes on either side. When two cars have to pass each other, they move into the cycle lane if it is clear.

Council staff are due to report back at the 11 December meeting.

Tasmanian Planning Policies set for 2026

The Tasmanian Government has announced the state’s first Tasmanian Planning Policies, which have a greater emphasis on active transport than the current planning scheme, will come into force from 1 July 2026.

The policies provide overarching guidance for legal requirements such as regional land use strategies and local planning schedules. Once they are enacted a review of the Tasmanian Planning Scheme will occur to ensure it’s consistent with the new policies.
