Victoria launches safety campaign for gig riders
Riders around Melbourne are often amazed at some of the antics of food delivery riders as they race to sign over tasty morsels to their ravenous customers: "Don’t they know the road rules,” we curse to no one in particular.

Well, that is all too true, as the state’s road safety authorities have discovered.

Now, something is being done to correct that and improve safety for the riders and the rest of us.

The Department of Transport and Planning is electronically delivering an educational campaign targeting the riders to improve their knowledge of Victorian road rules.

The campaign will be delivered through social media and digital advertising to food delivery riders and engage with food delivery platforms to communicate important road rule information to their riders.

The campaign will run in two bursts, to align with the end and start of university years: November and December 2025, and February and March 2026.

It will focus on key messages that remind food delivery riders about Victorian road rules:

  • ride on the road, not the footpath
  • stop at red lights and stop signs
  • pull over if you need to scroll on your phone
  • check your e-bike is legal before renting or buying.
Information is available in English, simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Hindi and Spanish.

The campaign messages are based on research, focus group testing and stakeholder feedback.
