Work will be underway soon on the upgrade of the Canterbury Road and Heathmont Road intersection, a major pain point for riders on the Heathmont Rail Trail.
First announced in 2024, the upgrade will widen and properly fence the path on the Canterbury Road bridge that riders use to continue along the trail when it switch from one side of the rail corridor to the other.
It will also install new bike lanterns and providing a shared crossing for pedestrians and riders on Canterbury Road.
Canterbury Road carries 36,000 vehicles a day and the intersection has a troubling crash history.
The project will also:
- upgrade the traffic lights with fully controlled right hand turns from Canterbury Road into Heathmont Road
- extend the right turn lane on Canterbury Road by removing the U-turn lane
- install flashing ‘Give way to pedestrians’ signs to alert drivers turning right from Heathmont Road
- widen the footpath and replacing the existing pedestrian fencing on the northern side of the rail bridge
- improve drainage and signage
- resurface Canterbury Road between Dickasons Road and Campbell Street.
These upgrades will make it safer for drivers turning right from Canterbury Road, and for people crossing Canterbury Road to reach public transport or the Heathmont Rail Trail.
The project is expected be completed by late 2026.
The works will likely impact path users and we will provide further information when available.
