Maroondah plan promises bike network expansion

Council has formally adopted the Maroondah Bicycle Network Plan 2025–2035, which lays out aspirations for a significant expansion of the municipality’s bike network.

The plan is aimed at improving safety, accessibility and connectivity for riders in the municipality.

It acknowledges priority projects outlined in other strategy documents – such as the construction of a Ringwood to Croydon pathway and a Greenwood Avenue pathway, and the completion of the Maroondah Highway Boulevard Extension (outlined in the Maroondah Transport Strategy 2025–2035).

Its full aspirational bike network is presented in a map:

The document also outlines design principles that will inform bike network construction – such as delivering off-road, separated infrastructure where possible – and strategies to support rider education and vulnerable groups.

The plan builds on the previous Maroondah Bicycle Network Plan 2004 (with updates to reflect the municipality’s recent growth) and was informed by public feedback collected on the draft plan in May and June 2025.

Mayor of Maroondah Cr Linda Hancock said: “The Maroondah Bicycle Network Plan 2025–2035 provides a framework to guide how Council will continue to support cycling over the next 10 years by improving and expanding a network of pathways, trails and bicycle lanes to address existing gaps, missing links and other barriers to cycling.

“The vision is to provide a safer, more connected cycling network to ensure that people of all ages and cycling abilities can access convenient cycling options.

“The updated plan reflects the latest research and best practice.

“By taking a forward-thinking and inclusive approach, the Maroondah Bicycle Network Plan sets a clear direction for cycling to become a central part of daily life.

“This will help support healthier lifestyles and reduce traffic congestion while creating a more vibrant, connected, and sustainable community.”
