Applications to the federal government’s $500 million Active Transport Fund are now open to councils, state and territory government projects.
The Active Transport Fund invites applications for projects that enable and enhance greater active transport in local communities.
Its last iteration, the 2024–2025 Active Transport Fund, was extremely successful, with $430 million in applications received for the $100 million fund.
This newest round will see $500 million disbursed to projects across the country over the next 10 years.
The program has been front-loaded to maximise its impact in the first three years, with $90.2 million allocated for 2026–2027, $75.3 million for 2027–2028 and $68.8 million for 2028–2029.
Previous major projects supported by the Active Transport Fund have included the Wilson St West Cycleway in Sydney, the Cottesloe Marine Parade Shared Pathway in Western Australia and the Kororoit Creek Shared Trail Stages 4 and 5 in Melbourne.
The federal government has also released funding guidelines for those hoping to apply this year.
As in the 2024 guidelines, the fund’s objective is to focus on road safety, reducing transport emissions and create active and liveable communities.
Projects should be standalone, for the construction of a new or upgraded bicycle or walking pathway that is on or associated with a public road.
State or territory governments and local government authorities can apply and up to $5 million is available for each eligible project, with a funding co-contribution required.
However, it is a new requirement this year that project design should consider the Austroads Guide to Road Design (AGRD) Part 6A.
This will mean all projects across all states will need to meet the AGRD standards or risk not being funded. Currently some states and councils have lower standards than the AGRD, and some higher.
If there is a bike project on a public road you believe should be built, make sure the relevant public authority knows about it, and this fund.
Applications will close at 5pm (AEST) on Wednesday 30 September 2026.
