The first of Victoria's new X’Trapolis 2.0 trains, featuring greatly improved provision for bike riders, has rolled off the assembly line in Ballarat.
It is the first of 25 train sets that will gradually replace the old Comeng trains, which are still on some lines of the Melbourne train network.
With the help of Bicycle Network, the new trains have been designed with dedicated wheelchair spaces and mixed-use spaces for prams and bicycles.
These mixed-use spaces are more adaptable and make the most efficient use of the available storage areas on the trains.
Bicycle Network has also worked with train design teams on the recently commissioned long-distance Velocity trains and on the HCTM trains, which will operate through the Metro Tunnel, to ensure their suitability for people with bicycles.
The new X’Trapolis trains have nearly 10% more capacity than the Comeng fleet, accommodating around 1225 people.
The first X’Trapolis 2.0 train will soon begin a rigorous testing program on the network before it takes its first passengers.
