Riders through Melbourne’s north-eastern suburbs have the opportunity to shape the next generation of bike paths, trails and other infrastructure across the City of Manningham.
Manningham says it is planning a new and innovative strategy that will supersede previous outdated walking and cycling strategies, combining both modes of active transport in one refreshed document.
The new strategy will focus on improving:
- on-road and off-road cycling infrastructure
- footpaths and walking trails
- connections to key destinations, trip generators and public transport networks
- end-of-trip facilities at key destinations
- bicycle facilities on key routes.
The city has asked for rider input as it starts work on the first draft.
Manningham has some great trail connections, especially the Main Yarra, Eastlink and the Mullum Mullum trails, but has lacked good connections for commuters and everyday local trips. Hills present a challenge for network planners but can be overcome if the appropriate priority is asserted.
The impact of the North East Link project will create opportunities for new connections.
Once complete, the strategy will help guide the city's programs, planning, infrastructure and advocacy for the next 10 years.
The project will also be supported by the TAC Local Government Grant Program, which provides funding to projects that help prevent road trauma and facilitate adoption of the ‘safe system’ approach to road safety: safe roads, safe vehicles, safe speeds and safe people.
