Sydney boxless bike trial extended
NSW TrainLink has extended a trial allowing riders to roll their bikes onto the Dubbo to Sydney and return XPT services without having to box them.

The extended trial will run for up to three months from 4 August 2025, with added stops at Bathurst and Orange.

Following rider feedback from the first trial, the second trial will run seven days a week and allow bigger bikes.

To roll your bike onto the train, it must weigh less than 20kg and measure no more than 1870mm in length, 1270mm in height, 400mm pedal width and up to 720mm handlebar width. Handlebar widths up to 765mm are allowed if they can be loosened and turned.

Maximum tyre thickness is 75mm and bikes must have no obtrusive features including flags, saddlebags and baskets. E-bikes are not permitted.

Those interested in taking part in the trial should arrive one hour before departure time and go to the luggage room to have their bikes weighed and measured.

Those with roll-on bikes will need to purchase a first-class train ticket and pay an additional $12.10 charge for their bike.

Passengers must book tickets by calling NSW TrainLink on 13 22 32 between 7am and 10pm daily. Bookings must be made between 21 days and 24 hours prior to travel.

There are two roll-on bike rack spaces available per service as part of the trial in addition to space for up to four boxed bikes.

More information can be found here.

The trial was introduced to assess the feasibility of transporting bikes on long-distance regional trains.

This second phase will continue to consider factors such as:
  • the ease of bike loading and unloading
  • any impact on boarding times and service punctuality
  • crew logistics for managing luggage and mid-journey bike boarding
  • passenger experience and behaviour with increased bike usage.
