With closure of the West Gate Freeway this weekend expected to cause massive traffic disruption, bike riders should be prepared for chaotic traffic in the inner west and central Melbourne on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August.
The West Gate Tunnel Project will be laying the final road surface on outbound lanes and ramps between Williamstown Road and Millers Road as well as installing testing and commissioning freeway management systems.
These critical works involve removing the existing road surface and laying open grade asphalt, which must be completed during daylight hours.
All West Gate Freeway outbound lanes between the West Gate Bridge and Millers Road will be closed over one weekend from 11.59pm Friday 29 August to 5am Monday 1 September.
Outbound entry ramps at Williamstown Road and Todd Road will also be closed during this time.
Significant delays of more than two hours are expected for traffic heading west from the city via detour routes.
This will spill large volumes of traffic onto busy roads that riders use or cross.
Routes affected include Blackshaws Road, Francis Street, Moreland Street, Dynon Road, Footscray Road, King Street, Flinders Street and Lorrimer Street.
But drivers being drivers, they will seek out any street that looks half likely to connect somewhere/anywhere.
Expect heavier, slower and less predictable traffic that will need serious attention and care to navigate through.
Consider changing your route or time of travel to avoid peak congestion areas and periods.
If it takes more time, it takes more time.
