North Sydney bike route clears important hurdle

An important bike route through Sydney's inner north has cleared one more hurdle following a council decision to endorse designs for a separated cycleway.

The West Street Cycleway in North Sydney forms part of a planned bike route connecting the forthcoming Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway to the suburb of St Leonards.

There are five schools within 200 metres of the proposed cycleway and the bike route will be particularly important in encouraging active transport among students and reducing congestion around the school gate at drop-off and pick-up times.

The first stage of the West Street Cycleway was opened in August 2023, which included a 100-metre two-way bike lane between Ridge Street and the Pacific Highway.

The North Sydney Council then turned its attention to stage two, a proposed 1.1km extension from Ridge Street to Amhurst Street to also include upgrades to pavement, new outdoor dining space, pedestrian crossings and new tree plantings, with a net loss of two car parks.

In December, the community was invited to offer its thoughts on the proposed designs, and responded with 271 public submissions. Although 75% were supportive of the designs, the council made some minor adjustments in response to the feedback.

These include honeycomb line-marking to slow riders down and prevent conflict with people walking, additional pedestrian crossings and improved signage.

Grant funding is being sought to proceed with detailed design and construction.
